MERCER WINE ESTATES
The Mercer family hired Skie Architecture Studio to guide a meticulous restoration and remodel of the historic Martins Jewelers space, originally constructed as Peoples State Bank in 1918, in downtown Walla Walla. This neoclassical gem housed Martin’s Jewelers for 133 years and was progressively altered by the design trends of the 1950s, 1970s, and 1990s: a drop ceiling was installed creating a cave-like mezzanine; the original coffered ceilings were covered and the skylights removed; the original terrazzo marble floors were carpeted; the detailed plaster walls were covered with wood paneling. DeVos Builders carefully uncovered and restored several of these features which are now part of the vibe of the Mercer Wine Estates tasting room. This transformation breathes new life into the neoclassic architecture, preserving its historic charm while repurposing it into an elegant and inviting wine tasting venue. The remodel is a harmonious blend of historical preservation and modern adaptation. This project not only revitalizes a cherished piece of Walla Walla's history but also creates a distinctive and welcoming space that celebrates the region's renowned wine culture.
